Reddit RSS Shutdown: Key Dates and What to Do Before November 13

Posted on October 2, 2026 by saudshoukat199@gmail.com

Reddit RSS feeds shut down on November 13, 2026. The company announced on October 1, 2026 that it will switch off RSS support entirely, calling the format “a common surface for large-scale scraping and automated abuse.” Moderators learned about the change a day earlier, on September 30, and regular RSS readers will not get a replacement feed. If you follow subreddits through an RSS reader, you have about six weeks to move your reading somewhere else. The change is part of a larger shutdown of public API access that ends entirely in March 2027.

What Is Happening: The Reddit RSS Shutdown Timeline

The shutdown is unfolding in stages. Each milestone below marks another door closing on open, unauthenticated access to Reddit content.

Date What happens
September 30, 2026 Reddit informs moderators of the upcoming RSS shutdown
October 1, 2026 Public announcement of the RSS and public API shutdown plans
October 31, 2026 Reddit stops accepting new requests for public API access
November 13, 2026 RSS feeds stop working for everyone
January 12, 2027 API access is removed for apps and developers that have not registered or responded
March 2027 Public API access ends entirely

The headline date for ordinary users is November 13. On that day, every .rss endpoint and feed URL on Reddit goes dark. Feed readers like Feedly, Inoreader, NewsBlur, and self-hosted setups such as FreshRSS will simply stop receiving updates from Reddit.

Why Reddit Is Killing RSS: The AI Scraping Angle

Reddit’s explanation is direct. RSS feeds are lightweight, machine-readable, and trivial to poll at scale, which makes them ideal plumbing for automated scraping. In the company’s words, RSS is “a common surface for large-scale scraping and automated abuse,” and the format no longer fits a world where entire AI datasets can be assembled from a few million feed requests.

This is not really about a few thousand hobbyists reading r/technology in a feed reader. It is about the economics of AI training data. Reddit’s user-generated conversations are among the most valuable sources of human discussion, opinion, and troubleshooting on the internet, and AI companies have been vacuuming them up for years. Reddit now licenses that data for serious money: a deal with Google worth around $60 million per year and one with OpenAI worth around $70 million per year, both signed in 2024. Those paid deals are not affected by the shutdown.

The message to everyone else is just as clear. Reddit has sued Anthropic and Perplexity over unauthorized scraping of its data, and it has been tightening the screws since its controversial API pricing changes in 2023 killed off many beloved third-party apps. This shutdown is the final step of that multi-year effort. Content flows to AI companies through paid licenses or not at all, and the question of which models get trained on what data is increasingly a business question, not just a technical one. Who Gets Affected

The shutdown reaches well beyond feed-reader hobbyists. Here is who needs to pay attention.

RSS readers

Anyone who tracks subreddits, user profiles, or search results through an RSS reader loses that workflow entirely. There is no replacement feed, and Reddit says affected readers should switch to the Reddit app, the website, or email digests. For people who follow dozens of subreddits quietly without logging in, this is the biggest day-to-day change.

App developers

Developers who never built on Reddit’s official platform lose access in stages. New public API access requests stop on October 31, 2026, unregistered apps lose access on January 12, 2027, and the public API ends completely in March 2027. Reddit is pushing developers toward its own Developer Platform, Devvit, which lets apps run inside Reddit’s infrastructure under Reddit’s control. More than 14,000 apps and bots have already registered to migrate, and Reddit is offering eligible apps $1,000 each from a $1 million migration fund along with technical support.

Moderators

Mods are not getting an RSS replacement either. Reddit is directing them to a Discord Relay Devvit app for notifications and moderation workflows. Volunteer moderators who ran bots, auto-flair tools, or alert systems on the public API will need to rebuild them on Devvit or lose them by March 2027.

Researchers and social listening tools

Academic researchers, journalists, and social listening services that relied on RSS or public API polling for data collection lose the easiest, cheapest collection methods. Several of these workflows were built on open access, and some will have to negotiate commercial data deals or rebuild on Devvit. Brands tracking sentiment and crisis signals across subreddits will need to budget for a different approach.

What You Should Do Now

The clock is ticking, but the migration is straightforward if you start before November.

If you read Reddit through RSS

Export your feed subscriptions now, before November 13, so you have a record of which subreddits you followed. Then pick your replacement: the official Reddit app, the website with a free account, or email digests for the subreddits you care about most. If you followed Reddit searches via RSS, note that email digests and saved searches inside Reddit are the closest official equivalents.

If you are a moderator

Look at the Discord Relay Devvit app, which Reddit is positioning as the official replacement channel for mod workflows. Audit any bots, scheduled scripts, or alert tools your team runs against the public API, and start rebuilding the critical ones on the Developer Platform before the January 12, 2027 removal of unregistered apps.

If you are a developer

Register for the Developer Platform now if you have not already, and apply to the migration fund if your app is eligible. Treat October 31, 2026 as your hard deadline for getting access sorted, and plan for a world where your app runs inside Reddit’s ecosystem rather than outside it.

The Paid Deals Continue: Google, OpenAI, and the Lawsuits

One group is completely untouched by all of this: Reddit’s paying data partners. The Google and OpenAI licensing deals, together worth roughly $130 million a year, continue as before. Reddit is effectively building a two-tier system. Licensed partners get structured, reliable data feeds for AI training, while everyone else gets the consumer app and the website.

The lawsuits against Anthropic and Perplexity fit the same strategy. Reddit wants a clear line between authorized, paid access and unauthorized scraping, and the RSS and API shutdowns remove the technical loopholes that made the line blurry. If you use an AI assistant and wonder where its answers about forum discussions come from, this is exactly the plumbing being renegotiated. Tools that cite Reddit answers will keep working through licensed data or through their own arrangements, which is one more reason the choice between AI assistants like Claude and ChatGPT may come down to what data each one is allowed to use. Old Reddit Is Shrinking Too

The RSS shutdown arrives alongside another squeeze on the old ways of using the site. Access to Old Reddit, the legacy interface beloved by long-time users, is being restricted: only moderators and people who used Old Reddit within the past six months will keep it. The pattern is consistent. Reddit is consolidating users onto its current, logged-in, ad-serving surfaces, and every legacy access path that bypasses them is being phased out.

FAQ

When do Reddit RSS feeds stop working?

November 13, 2026. Reddit announced the shutdown on October 1, 2026 (moderators were informed on September 30), and there is no replacement feed for ordinary readers.

What replaces RSS for Reddit readers?

Nothing equivalent. Reddit says users should switch to the official Reddit app, the website, or email digests. Moderators are directed to a Discord Relay Devvit app for workflow notifications.

When does the public API shut down?

In stages: new access requests stop October 31, 2026, access is removed for unregistered apps on January 12, 2027, and public API access ends entirely in March 2027.

Can developers still build on Reddit?

Yes, but on Reddit’s terms. Developers are being pushed to the Reddit Developer Platform (Devvit), where apps run inside Reddit’s infrastructure. More than 14,000 apps and bots have registered to migrate, and eligible apps can get $1,000 from a $1 million migration fund plus technical support.

Will AI assistants lose Reddit data?

The licensed ones will not. Google and OpenAI have paid data deals worth roughly $60 million and $70 million per year respectively, signed in 2024, and those are unaffected. What disappears is free, unauthenticated scraping, which Reddit is also fighting in court against companies like Anthropic and Perplexity.

Is Old Reddit going away?

Not entirely, but access is being restricted. Only moderators and users who used Old Reddit within the past six months keep access. Everyone else is moved to the current interface.

Will the shutdown be reversed?

That is very unlikely. This is the final step of a multi-year effort that began with the 2023 API pricing changes, and Reddit is backing it with a $1 million developer migration fund and active lawsuits against scrapers. The direction is clear: open, anonymous access to Reddit content is over, and the future runs through paid licenses and Reddit’s own platform.
