America.gov: How to Use the New AI-Powered Federal Website

Posted on September 30, 2026 by saudshoukat199@gmail.com

On September 29, 2026, the US government launched a brand-new front door: America.gov, an AI-powered website designed to be the first stop for anyone trying to deal with federal services. Instead of hunting through thousands of agency websites, you type a question in plain English and get an answer drawn from official government sources.

It is free, has no ads, and requires no login. Here is what the site actually does today, how to use it, and what is planned for 2027.

What is America.gov?

America.gov is a unified portal for US federal government information and services, rebuilt from the ground up around an AI chatbot. It was developed by the National Design Studio, a White House design and technology team led by US Chief Design Officer Joe Gebbia, the Airbnb co-founder, and is operated by the General Services Administration (GSA).

The idea traces back to an August 2025 executive order on improving government design. The chatbot itself is powered by two AI models working together: Google’s Gemini and xAI’s Grok, according to Gebbia’s remarks on CNBC. Its answers are drawn from roughly 29,000 federal, state, and local government websites, and every answer comes with links to the original official sources.

At the launch event at Washington’s Mellon Auditorium, Trump called it a “reinvention” of government and signed a companion executive order directing federal agencies to integrate their websites with the new portal.

What you can do on America.gov today

Right now, America.gov is an information tool, not a transaction platform. You cannot submit forms or track applications inside it yet. What you can do:

  • Ask plain-language questions about federal programs. Replacing a Social Security card, registering to vote, changing your address, comparing Medicare plans, registering a business, or renewing a passport: type it like you would ask a person and get a sourced answer.
  • Get help with federal job applications. The portal can explain how to find openings on USAJOBS and walk you through the federal hiring process; a direct in-portal job application tool is planned for a later phase. If you are job hunting, our broader guide to remote jobs for beginners covers the private-sector side of the same search.
  • Use voice or attach files. The chat box accepts typed questions, spoken questions, and file attachments, so you can ask the way that is easiest.

How to use it: a quick walkthrough

  1. Go to America.gov. There is no account to create and nothing to download.
  2. Type your question in the chat box. Be specific. “How do I replace a lost Social Security card?” works better than “Social Security.”
  3. Read the answer, then check the sources. Every answer links to the official government pages it was drawn from. Click through to confirm anything time-sensitive, like deadlines or fees.
  4. Follow the source links to take action. Since the site cannot process transactions yet, the links take you to the right agency page to complete the task.

One caution: on launch day, the chatbot gave some answers on political topics that contradicted statements Trump has made publicly, and several of those responses changed soon after. For factual how-to questions about programs and services, sourced from official pages, it is on firmer ground. For anything contested, verify against the linked sources, which is good practice with any AI tool.

What is coming in 2027

The administration has been explicit that the current site is phase one. Phase two, starting in 2027, turns the portal from an information layer into a place where you can actually complete government tasks in chat. The site itself puts it this way: going beyond answers, you will be able to complete forms, track progress, and organize everything in one place.

  • Passport applications and renewals. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said first-time passport applications will be possible entirely online starting in 2027, with the goal that the vast majority of passport and passport card applications run through the portal by the end of 2027. Separately, the White House says passport renewal transactions will arrive on America.gov later this year. Applicants will submit information, upload a photo, pay, and track approval and shipment without printing forms.
  • Legal name changes across agencies. One update that propagates everywhere, instead of separate filings.
  • A federal job application tool. Upload a resume and apply for government positions directly.
  • Benefits enrollment and tracking, plus Medicare enrollment, student loan tracking, and federal campsite reservations.

The executive order covers services used by more than 100,000 people a year, but explicitly excludes IRS tax filing and national-security-sensitive services. When transactions arrive, identity will run through Login.gov, the existing federal sign-in system.

The privacy question

At the launch, Trump claimed the site “cannot in theory be hacked into” and that “everything stays totally private,” with personal information neither collected nor stored. Those are strong claims for any website, and no independent security audit has been published yet. The no-login, no-tracking posture is genuinely better than most government portals, but if you are privacy-conscious, it is worth remembering that any chat input travels to the AI models processing it. For general online privacy hygiene, our guide to free VPNs that actually work is a good starting point.

Frequently asked questions

Is America.gov free to use?

Yes. It is free, has no advertisements, and requires no account or login.

What AI powers America.gov?

According to the US Chief Design Officer, the chatbot uses Google’s Gemini and xAI’s Grok. Google has confirmed it is a technology partner.

Can I apply for a passport on America.gov?

Not yet. First-time online passport applications are expected to start in 2027, with most passport services available by the end of 2027. The White House says passport renewal transactions will arrive later this year.

Does America.gov replace agency websites?

No. It sits on top of them. An executive order directs agencies to integrate with the portal, but the underlying agency sites and services remain.

Is my information private on America.gov?

The administration says no personal information is collected or stored and no login is required. No independent audit has verified the security claims yet, so treat sensitive inputs with normal caution.
